Don’t judge by the chapter you walked into.
It’s a new year, so I want you to change one thing. I would say “we,” but I’ve already been working on it the last two years (not that I’ve mastered it yet). Don’...

Why Some Women Don’t Want to Have Kids (And Why the Reason Is Not What You Think It Is)
Yes, I want to write about it (again), because it bothers me. I recently realized I don’t want to have kids (now and maybe ever). And I realized how difficult it is for a woman not only to adm...

You’re Fine
2018 has been a very successful year for me, because I finally understand that I’m completely fine. I just look at myself and I finally see myself. It took me half my life to understand it, bu...

It’s Profound to Be Understood
As Whoopi Goldberg said in her book „If He Says: ‚You complete me’ — Run!”, which I’ve already written about on JLNY some time ago, people tend to mistake love fo...

You’re Always Becoming
Michelle Obama released her book memoir, „Becoming”, and I keep seeing it everywhere in NYC. I haven’t read it yet and now I really want to. Not because I consider Barack Obam...

Drop This Attitude
I just had my best friend Gosia visited me from Chicago a few weeks ago. We spent the whole weekend together excited about each other. We did a few activities, but what was the most important was th...

Is Your Partner’s Skin Color or Country of Origin Relevant At All?
I will answer the titular question right away: „I don’t think so”. And I’m pretty sure I am right. I honestly don’t understand this whole theory about having a partner ...

How To Get the Body You Want
Have you ever said to yourself: “I’m so fat”…? Or “I can’t even look at myself”…?. Or “I will never lose all this weight”…? Or &l...

Accept the challenge
Until now, my favorite sentence was always: “Hope he’ll change after we get married.” (Yeah,  sure, into a pumpkin…) But there is a new contender that I find equally ...

NY Love Story A.D. 2019
I don’t like romantic comedies. And I can tell you why. Once, it used to be my favorite genre, but I grew up since then (a bit). Also — I moved to NY. Romantic comedies just don’t ...

When Was the Last Time Your Journal Embarrassed You?
When was the last time you said to yourself: “This is embarrassing”, and you actually meant yourself…? Well, it just happened to me. I sat down to write about something else and I...

Why It’s Important To Not Look Like Shit
Here is my question: Why do you think it’s a good idea to look like shit at home? Some people put on their worst clothes at home - clothes with holes, stretched out, worn out, old and ugly. (B...

Freaks, or New Yorkers

added: 2013-07-23 , category: Living in NY

The charm of NYC relies on the fact that you never know whom you’re going to meet just around the corner; who will smile at you; who will wish you a good day and who will call you a bitch. You can never know who will surprise you with their eccentric / happy / hysterical / reckless / kind behavior.

Do you remember the Benetton ads? That’s nothing compared to what you’re going to see over here. Everyone here is of a different color and different nationality, no one wants to look just like the person standing next to them, everyone is stressing their uniqueness. They do it in a variety of ways – by means of clothes (or lack of them), or with an unusual hat and strange objects attached to one’s body. If someone feels like wearing a pot on their head, they will do it (I’m not exaggerating). The variety of people will surprise you, shock you, delight you and scare you – it will make you say: “This is unbelievable”.

Same goes for people’s attitudes. Some people will show you their American ease, some will be reckless, and most will be indifferent to you and won’t even notice you on the street. You have to really work hard to earn interest over here. Even shouting out slogans won’t help you – people do it all the time here. Big deal. People will look at you in passing, thinking to themselves: “What’s that guy’s problem? I’ll throw him a quarter, maybe he’ll get quiet”.

Diversity that great has to be explosive, right? Well… it isn’t. This city thrives on symbiosis of a variety of characters. Of course, everyday you’re likely to run into a madman, since the city is full of them, but the mad people here are mostly harmless. A guy will scream about Jesus, swear at you, pray for you – and go his own way.

Strangest cases flock to this metropolis. Some dream of a career, some of fame, some of money and some are still unsure of they want, hoping to “find themselves”. There are eight million people here with variously sized egos, all of whom try to become Rockefellers and realize their American dream – from rags to riches. Of course most will remain in rags, but the crucial thing is to try and test oneself to learn about one’s weaknesses.

It is here that the saddest scenarios become reality – American dream can quickly turn into an American nightmare. Inability of coping with difficult reality and oneself make many people reach the very bottom. These are the stories of many immigrants (including Polish ones) who failed here. More often than not, they choose life in dire poverty over coming back to their homeland. They’re too ashamed to admit they failed. You will hear thousands of stories like that. It takes one hell of a freak to make it in this city.

Ah, one of my favorite parts of the city is the diversity. Sometimes on the subway, I look around and think I could pick 20 people each from different countries all over the world and I wouldn't get as eclectic a group as the people riding the subway I'm on. Congrats on the site!
